HUGE WIN FOR GASTROSCHISIS!! The American Academy of Pediatrics now provides educational resources to support awareness and understanding of gastroschisis among healthcare professionals.
In 2023 stakeholders for Gastroschisis including treating clinicians, epidemiological researchers as well as our CEO, Meghan Rauen were invited to the Global CDC Headquarters in Atlanta,GA to identify the Public Health needs for Gastroschisis. At the time, Meghan along with partners from Boston Children’s Hospital (Dr. Puder), Cincinnati Children’s (Dr. Helmrath and Dr. Cole) and the gutsy perspective (Marie Neumann) put forward the enormous gap in clinical understanding with long term outcomes gastroschisis and known complications our survivors face past the neonatal age. Meghan compiled stories from adult gastroschisis survivors as well as parents who had simple Gastroschisis children who have had complications and who have unfortunately died due to the identified gap in understanding to help underscore this critical gap that is both under-researched and as a critical gap in clinical understanding. Thanks to the American Academy of Pediatrics and CDC we (GGF) got to be part of a team of international experts to create this resource for clinical treatment teams: Guidelines for Understanding Gastroschisis when patients present to healthcare professionals! Expanding clinical and research understanding of the long term outcomes of our Gastroschisis survivors is one of the biggest identified gaps for our patient population, and this serves as a crucial turning point for patients and caregivers to be able to receive care and hopefully encourage clinical research to promote a deeper understanding, better treatment and outcomes for gastroschisis patients across their lifetime!
