Hi! My name is Ciera Huffman and I’m from Arizona. I am currently a CNA at HonorHealth hospital and pursuing a degree in nursing. I am the mom of my 2 year old daughter, Lexi. She was born at 34 weeks with complications that resulted in her only having 4 cm of small intestines left which led to her diagnosis ultra short bowel syndrome. She is one of very few in Arizona with “ultra” SBS. She now has over 50 cm of intestines and is slowly weaning from her TPN and increasing her G tube feeds as well. Unfortunately throughout her hospital visits she forgot how to eat by mouth, therapies haven’t worked and it’s a constant struggle everyday. She spent the first 9 months of her live in the hospital from AZ, CA, PA, and back to AZ. It was a tough 9 months not knowing when we would come home with many surgeries, countless poking, tons of new faces, throwing up, no answers and so much more. But throughout her journey she has been the strongest little girl I know and one of the happiest. We knew only one mom in AZ with similar medical conditions and when we went to CA we were introduced to Avery’s Angels Foundation and from there we met so many other families with kiddos and adults with Lexi’s same medical conditions. Avery’s Angels Foundation was so welcoming and supportive through our journeys and I’m proud to be apart of the foundation and continue to support and meet many new people and inform the world on Gastroschisis.
